Happy Birthday Singapore

now, i hate it when i fall asleep blogging halfway
that's because i always forget to save my blog entry
and now i have to re-type it all over again
technology... doesn't it hinders more than helps?

so, National Day's Eve was eventfully spent,
thanks to a series of programmes laid out
for my Japanese friends who were in town.

You guess who are the Jappies... :)
Well it's pretty obvious, if you notice the hands, cos it is an inborn mechanism in most Jappies to do the "peace-out" sign when photo-taking. It just comes naturally to them. You'll know when you go to Japan, or if you hang around them long enough.

(From left, Me, Eri, Newton Kopi Uncle aka extra, Nao, Aki and Michelle)

i mourn the demise of my fruits of labour
in my 3 years of Japanese Language studies at NUS
cos' i was uttering really unintelligible Japanese that night
in fact i'm even surprised how i could entertain them
on our journey home from the airport.
(I had gone to the airport to fetch them that afternoon,
when i witnessed for the first time in my entire life
a fellowship of "Twins" fans in anticipation of their arrival.)

Decked out in green
Falalalala
Wo men yong yuan zhi chi ni...
Suckers.

Ok, back to the main.
As i was saying, these Japanese are real animated
like Anime lah...
probably that's why Anime characters have the most expressions
unlike dull old American Cartoons.. come to think of it
the Americans were not really hot on cartoons
in fact, i think they're better at muppets... or *gasp* teletubbies?
and muppets basically have only one expression...

these friends of mine, although Japanese
but experiences around the world have liberated them
and they are not the typical Japanese you'd imagine them to be
yeah... but of course some of their mindsets and actions are inherently Jappy.

I keep digressing... back to the topic of National Day's Eve
we went to Newton Circus for dinner
because we figured there was no other place to bring them
for food that was good and cheap
In the end, the food sucked big time,
though they seemed to enjoy everything
ooohing and ahhhing at everything we brought to the table.
The night went by torturously
having to cnverse in "broken Jap", of course
until the arrival of you. Yes... You... thank You.

finally, the evening ended, or shall i say started
with us proceeding to Marina Bay for the fireworks
it was kinda meaningful to spend National Day's Eve this way
with foreign friends, bringing a part of our culture to them
also, there's something magical about fireworks
flashes and splashes
against the ebony black sky
but i guess i was too busy flashing them
i hadn't had a chance to sit back and take in the breath-taking sight.
Technology, it blinds you sometimes.
Well, but someone has gotta bring that breath-taking sight to you
even if it was badly taken...
Through the looking glass... Take a peek...

After the fireworks, we headed home
on our way back, i heard this woman saying,
(loosely translated from Mandarin)
"Wah, this year the fireworks quite good. Lasted for more than 5 minutes."
Then i was like thinking, 'yah man... not bad a show..."
until michelle had to burst my bubble quipping,
"You know ah, Eri said that in Japan, the fireworks usually last 1 hour and they even have it in the form of Hello Kitty"

I was like... "WAT!!! I demand a refund...i feel shortchanged man"
So so... i am an ugly Singaporean... so what? I Like!
heehee.. there were many other ugly Singaporeans along the way home too
you know, when everyone was so united, cheering at the fireworks show
and right after that, when making their way home,
there was this huge jam and human traffic jam.
people started pissing each one off?
Well, that's humanity for you... we're ugly.

That night, Eri stayed over at my place
To minimise communication, i took out all the photographs i could lay my hands on
so that we could just comment on the pictures
I was pretty amazed we did that all the way to 3:30am in the morning
surviving on my deficit Japanese Language
She showed me pictures of her trip to Germany, Egypt, Italy, etc etc.
(they have been travelling since January)
and i was finally convinced that she's still a Jappy girl at heart
cos she wiped out the entire Chanel store in Germany
evident by the Chanel, Gucci paper bags she was posing with for the pictures.
Now, I snap "cheap" pictures, because i am confined to Singapore
but looking at pictures Eri snapped, i think there is truly a distinction between
"cheap" pics and "expensive" pics.
But i am contented with the simple things of life.
After all i am Singaporean.
Happy Birthday Singapore.
