and i already miss the food in Singapore
of course the people needless to say
I wonder how people can stand staying away
from home for such long periods of time.
Firstly, there is the climatic change
(which is not a bad thing after all)
cos the weather in Perth is so good
it is bright and sunny in the mornings
just the way i like it, never humid and
i don't get sweaty feet from walking too much
and no sweaty pits of course.
But the wind is a different story altogether.
It completely slices me up and i suspect
it could have aggravated my mild cough
to one of pneumonic proportions as i sense
a slight wheezing cough on the way.
On top of that, my head aches
possibly from too much coughing
or the wind that's causing a brain freeze.
as i write, i am on a dosage of panadol
Though Perth is sprinkled with asians and non-angmohs
the majority of the population is angmoh.
Not that it's a bad thing again,
but i'm probably accustomed to the
'mind your own business' culture we have in Singapore.
It's clearly in their blood to make small talk,
be chatty and smiley at all times.
Like when i was at the airport, the officer asked me
"so what are your plans?"
and being the un-spontaneous me
i gave her a really blank look which probably
set her thinking "blimey asians".
But what was i supposed to have answered?
List out everything i'm going to do during my trip
including the tiniest of details?
Give her a general overview of my trip?
It seems a little contrived to me.
Darlz said that Singapore is trying to achieve
the same level of service standards
but it is different because in Singapore people think
that it is contrived when shop assistants go,
"Welcome", "Have a nice day" yadda yadda yadda
I don't know, but i think it is the mindset
can't say for certain if it's an Asian trait
but personally, i think the individual
has to break down surrounding walls
and go with the flow.
I am too conscious, as someone puts it
that is why i am always more concerned
about what others see than what they do
After all the complains, yes, the happy things...
1) I survived my 5 hour flight alone. Yes. I had a window seat and though i was fantasizing about a cute angmoh/japanese/singaporean seated beside me most of the time, i got none. Though the air stewards on Qantas are quite cute, one of them looked like Stephen Gately from Boyzone, and they were quite nice. I have to mention that i received a few pitiful glances (that again, could have risen from my own thoughts of consciousness), because i was travelling alone. But i happily imagined myself having contracted a terminal illness, going on my last solo flight. Morbid, i know
2) Seeing my baby after 5 months? It's funny how i always hope for a dramatic romantic reunion each time i'm picking him up at Changi when he returns. likewise, i hoped for the same. i was disappointed cos i was whizzed out of the airport and into his car, when he surprised me with something even better, a bouquet of lilies. He couldn't find my favorite tulips so he got me a bunch of pink lilies. It was sweet though at that time, i was too cold to think and recipocrate with a kiss or word of appreciation.
3) The lemon tree in Currie Hall. Darlz stays in Currie Hall which is really near his campus and there is this lemon tree right beside the hall where he stays. Every morning when we pass the lemon tree, i catch a whiff of lemon scent and it smells really fresh. We picked one really big lemon yesterday and i'm gonna sneak it back to Singapore for my mummy. There are orange trees growing in his campus as well, not to mention an abundant supply of wild roses, lavenders and pretty flowers everywhere. Singapore tries really hard to be the garden city, but it's lacking in spontaniety in so many ways.
4) Shopping. Though it really is my favorite anywhere i go. Stuff in Perth ain't that cheap though there are some shops like Sportsgirl, Just Jeans which you can't find in Singapore. But the stuff they sell are about the same everywhere you go. The frumpy skirts are in now, as well as the long peasant wrinkled skirts, goldish sequinned stuff, metallic baggies etc... all these which can be found in Singapore. Pardon me if i am a lousy souvenir shopper when you receive your gifts.
5) Food... Though i do really miss the local fare in Singapore, i haven't been ill-fed these past few days. We had some fast-Japanese food at this place called Taka, fish and chips with big ring calamari at this place called Cicerellos, kebabs from this nice place near his campus, and of course my baby cooked really OILY spaghetti with breaded chicken cutlet for dinner last night.
I think i should really stop here though there's more to blog about.
We're going for our road trip up north tomorrow and i've gotta turn in now.
More to come and piccies the next post.
I miss you guys.
