Amazing Grace

it was a chilling moment
when i received news
of that fateful moment
that would make history
in my teaching career.

that moment so surreal
it lingered on, like the spirit of death
as you would see in the movies
waiting to chance upon that moment
to suck away the essence of life

"Ms C, she jumped", she said
hugging me so tight
i couldn't breathe
or did my heart skip a beat?
we held each other
and forgot i was a teach.

I had never seen death from such a distance

reality set in
i had to help with crowd control
we hollered them back to safety
to a place where their loved ones waited for them
to a place where rejection does not exist
to a place where encouragement abounds
to a place where forgiveness is in abundance
to a place where failing an exam does not make you a failure
in the eyes of society

i prayed.
like i have never before.

looking back,
i could have been her
if not for Him
wherein there is no condemnation

i thank my family
that i can stand on my own feet
and help those like her
to stand again
