For the past few weeks:
I've been cracking my brains to make lessons more interesting
finding ways and means to teach English
how i wished it was as easy as ABC
when a random search on the internet conjured up the word
"School of Rock"
and the song "Conjunction Junction"
that goes ...
"conjunction juntion what's your function..."
i enjoyed watching the clip and singing along thoroughly
thinking naively that the bunch of them would absolutely love it
that they'll henceforth remember the lesson
Verdict:
It sounded a tad too Sesame-Streetish when i played it in class... and the students voiced their preference for Hoobastank, Simple Plan, Taufik Batisah and what nots...
Flop! Effort wasted.
That same afternoon:
and there i was slumming in my chair in the staff room
feeling lousy about the unproductivity of my lesson
and Mdm Suzannah comes hopping along with a great big smile
"Hi, Do you teach English to Sec 2/2?"
"Err... Yes..."
"Did you do conjunction junction with them? (Shows piece of paper with slight foot imprint) ... i found this on the floor of the class"
*Double Whammy*Feels sick*Reinforcing despondency*
"Yah... i guess it's kinda too sesame-street and the students are not responding well to it."
"Really? We had a lecturer who went through it with us at the English course, i missed it and i thought it would be nice to do it in class. I actually heard your students humming along to the song 'Conjunction Junction what's your function' during my class. How does it go?"
*First thought: Ray of hope*
